The twentieth in a series of twenty-four

by Peter J. Stevens

March, 2003

I am sitting in my office and I can see through the window, snow flurries. The temperature is warmer than it has been for a week or more, but we are still in the grasp of winter. Tonight, I think I will take my camera and capture some parts of the city covered in the white blanket of fresh snow. Although winter is not my favorite time of the year, I do enjoy winter scenes. Although the snow is a cold, physical reminder that we are still enjoying Winter, Spring is just around the corner. With Spring, comes new life and energy. And so it is with Delaware Valley Mensa (DVM). We are in the process of change and renewed energy. I, for one, as well as the members of the board, hope you can sense our enthusiasm and enjoy the results of our efforts.

Dues renewal notices are in the mail from Home Office. Please take the time to fill out the form, write a check and put it all in an envelope and mail it back in. The Executive Committee (Ex-Comm) is working diligently to provide activities you will enjoy participating in, speakers who will capture your imagination, and generally speaking, provide you, our members, a chapter of which you can be proud to be a member.

The Nominating Committee has put together quite a slate of candidates for you to consider as your representative on the Ex-Comm. This is one of the most difficult tasks of any committee within Mensa. In reviewing the newsletters from other chapters, I notice that many chapters have many “open” positions. Delaware Valley Mensa has been fortunate to keep this to a minimum. Thank you Don Baldino, Steve Kaess and Nancy Rauch for your tireless effort in a thankless and most difficult job. Let each of us do our part and show our appreciation for their efforts by completing the ballet that will appear in April’s Proteus, and as we did with our dues, mail it in. Although the Ex-Comm gives direction to DVM, it is important to remember that this is your chapter and your vote does make a difference.

There has been a resurgence of SIGs. Several movie SIGs have sprung up, luncheon and dinner groups are meeting regularly and we even have a French Speaking group. Several activities are specifically designed and available for new members. Check out the calendar, I am sure that you will find a number of activities to enjoy. If you do not see something that strikes your fancy, plan an activity of your own and the board may even cover the expenses.

All in all, all things considered, where the rubber meets the road -- this is a great chapter. It is a great chapter because of the great people, like you, who make it what it is. With your help and guidance, we will make it even better.
