Well, here we are, the first week after the AG is over and I am nearly rested. Thanks to
the hard work of dozens of people, the AG was a success. There were no lines at registration,
food in hospitality was plentiful and varied and the programs were informative and, in some
cases, funny. I can't thank the committee enough for their efforts. I've been told by seasoned AG
attendees that we have set a new standard of excellence.
The only complaints I had were back handed compliments. Several folks complained that
they had no time to meet other people in the registration line and had to fill up time between
registration and the first program by reading the program book. The committee from Dallas is
fretting over how they can top what we did in hospitality. Otherwise everyone had ample
opportunity to mix and mingle with Mensans from all over the world. There were folks from
Canada, England, The Netherlands and Australia as well as from all over the United States.
Despite the wonderful time we all had, the last day of the AG started on a very sad note.
David Mann, former RVC for region 5 and one of the most gentlemanly men I've met, had a
heart attack in his room and passed away. He was a good friend to many of us and will be
missed. The comforting thought is that he died after spending 5 days with his oldest friends,
making new friends and generally grabbing life with both hands. There is a scholarship fund
being established in his name. Money sent to MERF earmarked to the David Mann Scholarship
will be added to the money collected at the AG.
